Comment: USS Tulare was the beginning of a 28 year career in the Navy. I reported
aboard USS Tulare in Dec. 1966 to 1st Div. I later transfered to S Div. to
become a storekeeper. In 1968 I left to attend basic electronic school in
San Diego, Ca. to become a Data Systems Technecian. I retired in Dec. 1994
as a DSCS.
Thanks to the USS Tulare and a great crew for starting a great career.

Duty Station: USS TULARE, USS BRICE CANYON
Comments: Hi all: I got a call about a reunion for the Tu Tu. I checked out the web site and
wanted to input my info. The Tulare was my second command I was stationed on
the Brice Canyon AD36 in Pearl Harbor for 2 years. My next command the USS
Tulare LKA 112 met her down in San Diego 5/76. She was a reserve traning
command by than. I was promoted to ETR2 after I reported aboard. I was in
the OPS department and we had lots of parties and trips to go ski at Tahoe.
I ended my 6 years and got discharged at Treasure Island in 11/78. I have
some photos of the TuTu during my duty years. Let me know if I should send
some pics I would have to convert paper to digital. I have a photo of the
Tulare in a Long Beach berth next to a pink submarine. Let me know about the
renuion. Thanks again Mike Sweeny

Comments: Joined "Mike" boats... what a great bunch of guys... Became only
SN over 3 Lead Coxswain... There is no boat like an LCM, used to
break my heart when we would use one for target practice in the open
waters.
Will always remember our entry into Sydney Harbor and
the wonderful welcome we were given by all of Sydney -- least of
all "Whiskey A Go-Go"
To those who know -- remember the "visitors"
who came to San Diego with us ?
I still have and live my love
for the water. My prayers and best to all Tulare "The world's largest
and fastest LKA".. Lee Sullivan

Duty Station: Uss Tulare AKA112 and USS outagamie LST 1073
Tulare crew member from 10/59 - 7/62
Comments: I met the Mighty T in Yokosuka, Japan in Oct.1959. I was put in 3rd
division: boat division. I went to 4th division about a yearand six
months later.I was on the 1961 WESPAC cruise while on deployment
I made FTG3. I left the Tulare as she was preparing to depart for
another WESPAC cruise in 1962. I went to an LST: USS Outagamie County
I was rated 2nd Class while there, There was no billet for a FTG2
on board a LST, but had such a short time to go for discharge; I
remained on board until late December when that ship departed for
Hawaii to rechart the Islands. I will never forget my first sight
of the Tulare she was huge to this first time on board sailor. The
biggest Boatswain Mate by the name of Smiley was deploying the gangway. He
did not smile often and I was placed in his division. Others I remember:
Joseph Francis:P.G. Smith; Rosencrans,Chuck Updike; Taylor,W.C.;Peanut
Myers, and many more that time does not allow me to mention; sorry
about that Pettit. Royce (Sammy) Baugh Carl Shanner is probably
the one sailor who might respond. try royce.baugh@gmail.com

Comments: I am Captain Donald W. Todd's Step-Grandson. While I only knew him
for about 8 years he was a wonderful man and made a strong impression
on me. He had a wry sense of humor and had a brother that also Served
as a Captain named David Wooster Todd. My uncle Bob Neubegan was
also a Captain in the Navy and I believe my grandmother met Captain
Todd through her brother that also attended the Naval Academy at
Annapolis. In any case, congratulations on the 50th anniversary to
all who served on this beauty of a ship and lets pray for peace in
our time so that these ships can be used merely for defensive purposes
from now on..
Sincerely,
Bruce Carlyle Pietsch

I have a lot of good memories of the Tulare. She is a great ship
and it's sad to see her just sitting idol with her paint faded away
like it is. I live just a few miles from her and I sometimes go over
to make sure she is still there.
I for one, really appreciate everything
you have done with your Tulare website. A truly great job! Thanks
for sharing it with us.
