Comment: I was a Hospital Corpsman assigned to 3rd Marine Division infantry Batalions 2/4, 2/9, 3/9 from 1973 through 1975. I had the WARM pleasure of hitching a ride aboard the Tulare on what must have been her last cruise to the Phillipines in early 1975. My rack was in the forward troop compartment and I can tell you it was like an oven. We joined Operation EaglePull in Subic Bay and steamed to Cambodia on board the USS Okinawa.

Comment: ED, I BETTER LEAVE THE NAMES OUT OF THIS ONE, AND THE DATES TOO. BUT WHEN I WAS MEDICAL OFFICER ON THE TU TU, A CERTAIN COMMANDING OFFICER REFUSED TO ALLOW A CERTAIN COOK WHO DID ALL THE BAKING FOR THE SHIP TO SACK OUT AFTER HE'D STAYED UP ALL NIGHT BAKING, AS WAS THE CUSTOM IN THOSE DAYS. SO THAT BAKER MADE A DEAL WITH THE MEDICAL DEPARTMENT--IF WE WOULD LET HIM SACK OUT IN OUR MEDICAL WARD, AWAY FROM THE CAPTAIN'S EYE, HE'D MAKE SURE OUR REFFER WAS NEVER WITHOUT GALLONS OF ICE CREAM! THAT WAS A DEAL WE COULDN'T REFUSE--AND DIDN'T. THAT MAN JUST RETIRED AFTER A LOT OF YEARS ON THE SF POLICE DEPARTMENT. I'M GOD FATHER TO HIS DAUGHTER. MY BEST TULARE MEMORY! Comment: My name is Larry Young. I was aboard the Tulare from March 1964 until September 1966. We made 3 West-Pac cruises during my time aboard. The last two times we spent most of our time taking troops on their 5 day R & R trips. Also crossed the equator 2 times. I have pictures available from the 1966 equator crossing, if any one would like to see them. I was an FTG3 in the 4th division. I was very happy to find the web site, but have not been able to get my message onto the guest book. I kept getting the message that the host "POP" was unheard of. I have E-mailed Bill MacDougall and Bruce Lutz from the list. I have heard from Bill, but not Bruce yet. I'd like to hear from some of the gunners mates and fire control techs that I worked with. I did recognize Smokey from the photo. Please add my message to the guest list. Keep up the good work on the web site. You are doing a terrific job. Larry

If you are the right guy I rembember when you first came aboard I told you that if we were under fire your job was to get the running lights out. We did come under fire in Chu Lai and I rembember crawling over you to get to my wheel and engines to get underway. I can't rembember the date however. If you do I would like to know this. We drove you guys crazy dirtying up a brand new, spotless ship that was boarding "Raggedee Ass Marines" for the first time. Comment: I served aboard USS Tulare (LKA-112) from March 1973 until January 1975. I came aboard out of MM "A" school as an MMFA and rose to the rank of MM3 while aboard. After my duty aboard the Tulare, I returned home to my reserve center for about a year and then I returned to active duty for 2 years in San Diego aboard the USS Ajax (AR 6), before leaving the Navy. My time aboard the Tulare was a memorable time. In many ways it has taken me some 25 years to appreciate just how much. I only spent about 2 years aboard that ship, but it was spent at a time in my life that was very important to me. I will never forget the places I saw, the people I met, or the things I learned about the world and especially about myself! Many thanks to the USS Tulare!

Comment: Upon graduation from ETN School, Great Lakes, I was sent to Crypto School at Mare IS. and then to the USS Tulare. I served 3 years on the "Big T" and made 3 WesPac cruises. My older brother Richard, graduated from ETR School and was assigned to the Tulare working for me 2 years after I went aboard. My first EMO was Mr. Timm and we served under 4 Captains. Crossing the equator initiation, patrolling the Gulf of Tonkin, Bangkok, Subic Bay, Nagasaki, Hong Kong, Sasebo, Yakuska, Guam, Korea, Kaoshung, Christmas IS., and many other Japanese, Okinowan, and Phillipine ports as well as Hawaii were visited many times and all very memorable. The Casino nights were always a lot of fun and we thank the many Marines who donated to remodeling our Crew's lounge. Butch, the best cook in the Navy, always kept us well fed.

Comment: Slipped on spilled oil on the deck in September 75 and blew out right knee. Commander Stapelton had the duty in sick bay and gave me a light duty chit. It needed to be approved by the Captain, Commander Robert W. McCullough. The XO Lt. Commander Floyd H. Fields stopped the chit and said, "If you aren't fit enough to be on full duty in my Navy, by god I'll get you a discharge." The salty old bastard transferred me to Treasure Island and had me boarded out of the Navy after I fought it for 3 months. Never went to sea, never even saw the Captain. Sure wanted to do at least one WestPac. Don't remember any of the rest of the crew. Oh well.......I used the G.I. Comment: Congratulations and appreciation for the commendable job on the Tulare web site. I can add a bit of information now and maybe more later. C.O. Tulare #7 was Captain Donald B. Ramage, USN. I relieved him on 11 July 1963 and I was relieved as you have shown except it was 14 July 1964, not '63. I have no picture of Ramage nor do I know any other dates; however, I may be able to come up with additional info. I happen to know that Captain O'Brien lives in Florida. My fine Executive Officer,CDR Martin Betts, lives in Stafford, VA. Captain Ramage died in California in 1990. We have not finished unpacking all of the gear we moved. I may have a few things that would help to fill in on your history of Tulare. Some may be on slides, if you can use them. Anyway, my best wishes to you and appreciation for sponsoring the web site for the great ship that was a home for each of us during an exciting chapter of our lives. Thanks again, and my best wishes to you. Captain Ben.

I love this web site! I was surfing the web and decided to type in USS Tulare. I really didn't expect to find anything. I was a weekend warrior stationed aboard the Tulare from 1977 to 1979 - when the ship had the letters "LKA". I was a hospital corpsman and the Tulare was the only ship I got to serve on. I found out a lot of information about the history of the Tulare that I never knew before. I really enjoyed my time aboard her. I have a question that I thought you might be able to answer - if you have the time to send a return e-mail. I haven't seen any of my crewmates in years. Do you know of anyway I can get a roster of names of the members of the crew during the years 1977 to 1979. At the time half the crew was active duty and the other half (my half) was reservist. The guys who were active duty can probably remember the names of their crewmates better then I can, but I remember them and I'd sure like to get intouch with some of them, if I can. Thanks for any information you can give me and again, thanks for having such a great website.

Comment: I was Navigator and Admin Officer in Tulare from 1978 until her decommissioning in 1980. Tulare was decommissioned just before a holiday weekend; as I only had to report to Monterey, a couple of hours down the road, I was left in charge of a security crew for 4 days until she could be towed up to Suisun Bay. It was pretty eerie wandering around the deserted decks of the ship that just days before had been so alive. Tulare was a terrific ship, and I really enjoyed my tour in her.

Comment: I boarded the USS Tulare in Subic Bay as part of the Marine 7th Fleet readiness Battalion afloat. The year was 1961 and as a Marine I was quite happy to have found a home on the Tulare. Before this time my ship experience had been on APA's and as you may surmise a lot more crowded than a AKA. What I remember the most is how much the crew of the Tulare respected us grunts and we were just playing war games at that time. I'm very proud to have been part of the Tulare's history and it sounds as if the ships crew did the ultimate to see that the Marines were givin a grand send off to Nam!

Comment: I came aboard the Tulare right from boot camp in March of 1959, right after she got back from Westpac, along with two other guys from my bootcamp company, R. Ryan and B. Serad. I started a SA in 2nd Division and later became a Quartermaster striker. I made two Westpack cruises (as mentioned in the memories section by George Dean RD2). I also remember going to help two merchant ships that ran aground on a island near Japan in that time frame. I was a shorttimer (due out Jan 1963) when she was going to depart in Oct of 1962, so I was transfered to the Hector AR-7 in Long Beach. Then in Oct, the Cuban Missile Crisis broke out and I was transfered back to San Diego to the Chowanoc ATF-100. We stayed in the SD area towing target sleds for DD's and other ships. All that of course went away and I actually got out 8 days early. You may publish this in the Guest Book. I have looked at some of your links and you are doing a good job here. There is a lot about the Viet Nam war that many don't know about. I have heard from 2 other crew members, so this has really been pleasent. Maybe some day I'll look in my old foot locker and see what pictures and can find. I know i have a cruise book there. Hope to keep in touch. Silvio

I was immediately placed in "A" division and was given the emergency diesel generators and fire pumps to maintain. I was also assigned to a LCM as a boat engineer and for a while I was assigned to the Captain's gig, this was considered premium duty. Captain Robinson was the C.O, CDR. Wilhoit was the XO.
