Comment: Fantastic to read all your thoughts! Here's wishing you all a festive season and the best in 2003! You all brought back some great memories of my years and cruises on the good ole ship. Being both the personnel officer and the EMO it was a great crew. Remember well the Willie Willies, King neptune, wild pig hunting, 1-A's , finding things in the CO2 locker, taking photos of chinese junks , shore patrol, Subic Bay and pulling together the cruise book. Most important my special thanks to a HM1 (BANNISTER as I recall) that gave me my smallpox vac after I had very stupidly chewed out my Chief in public-- what A change for this Bright(maybe not so), SHINY new, young Ensign. Thanks to the ETs and RDs that kept us operational-- never did hold a liberty card. ALL of You guys tought me alot about leadership and LIFE! After leaving the Tulare I spent 10 years building two companies and then moved to Bogota, Colombia then became a diplomat with the US Department of State retiring after 24 years with postings in Latin America and Africa. Most of my success I can reflect back to adventures and times on the USS Tulare. I still have my plaque and my lighter. EX-TRIDENTE-PAX Thanks to all Steve Ryner, Woodbridge,VA

Comment: I went to school with Ben Lovell who served as an officer on the Tulare from 1966-68. I just learned that Ben died in May 2002 in Massachusetts. He was a good friend although I never saw him again after we graduated in 1959. I would appreciate it if any of his former shipmates could tell me about his Navy career serving on your ship. Thanks.

Comment: My best friend was named Wade Booth (1st thru 12th grade..Boot Camp etc) and he was on the Tulare from 72 thru 74. The Connie and Tulare were in Subic at the same time one inport period. He went to the Connie while I was trying to find him at the Tulare and we missed each other. The OOD and the Petty Officer told me which bar that the Tulare favored in Olongapo so I ziggy-na'ed over there. We Hooked up and PARTIED all weekend long. He got out not soon after that on a needed family hardship discharge. I got out March 14, 1975 and returned back to Arkansas. The morning of March 15, 1975 he was killed in a home explosion. So the last time I ever saw him alive was in the PI where I met and partied with some GOOD crewman from the Tulare. He thought and talked alot about the crew of the Tulare and I salute ya'll.

Comment: Hi to all Tulare hands. I went straight from RMA school to the Big T as it was called in those days. I remember G. Dean RD2 who wrote that nice little bit. I could tell you a tale about that boy who once borrowed my Pea Coat. Anyway, I felt like a real oldtimer when I read through the guest book. Hardly any entries from the first few years of the Big T's exsistence. Had good times and good friends on board. My GQ was in the radio shack. 1A in the boat group commanders boat. Entering port I was the radioman taking instructions from the pilot and relaying them to the tugs. Have some pictures, and cruise books from 58-59, 59-60. Seems they lack for info and clear pictures. Would like to hear from anyone who wants to e-mail. Smooth sailing mates!! Bill

Comment: In the late 60's I was aboard Tulare for a Reserve cruise. I was an LCDR then and the ship had no troops embarked when I reported. So I ended up with the troop commander's stateroom. Very plush indeed for an old tincan sailor. I remember Tulare as a friendly, easy riding ship with pretty decent chow and more room than I could imagine. At the last moment our orders were changed from a two week training session starting and ending in San Diego to a two week trip eventually ending in Long Beach. What to do with my car? No problem for the Tulare. I drove the car down on the pier, the deck force popped it in No 1 hold (no scratches) and we had wheels for liberty in Long Beach. You AKA guys had it made.

Comment: In reference to leading task to acquire a ship from either U.S. Navy or Maritime Office will take so long and it will cost lots of funds. And where I am living, Streamwood, Illinois, it will be difficult to do. Streamwood, Illinois is located about 40 miles from downtown Chicago. As I mentioned, that there are very few Gator Navy's ship were preserved, and I am sure many of people who served the Gator Navy, would like to see AKA to be displayed to the public. There are many factor, which we need to work, Site, and obtaining support from the cities and communities. I heard that one of LPH is possibly acquire by City of Long Beach. But USS Tulare is one of Mariner type and only three were acquired by the Navy. I will be more than happy to correspondence with you to exchange information of the Navy ships. Let me introduce myself. My name is Masao Aochi, everybody called me Masa. I joined the Navy in 1966 had gone to San Diego Naval Training Center for Basic Training and was transferred to USS Muliphen (AKA61) C2 type hull and was designated as BT from beginning. After we made Caribbean Deployment, I was sent to Boilerman School A at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where I spend 5 months learning about Naval Engineering. Then I had chance to swap duty from the East coast to west coast, where I am originally from. Then I was transferred to USS Winston (AKA94), which has identical engine room lay out with previous duty ship, therefore, I did not have any problem learning the system in the engine room While we were in West-Pac Cruise, I was assigned as Oil King duty, which taking care of on board fuel consumption as well as water treatment. After we spent 8 months off Vietnam coast, we returned to San Diego where our ship was decommissioned. Due to reduction of force, I was discharged earlier than expected. Then I joined major international airlines and spent 32 years. While I was with the organization, I transferred 8 times to various cities in the U.S. and Japan. I was just laid off from the company due to 911 tragedy. Then I applied for early retirement. But I will start with new job from next week, while I have applied for Federal Government job. That is me. Well, I will be closely monitoring Navy activities through Internet, and please input any new website you may find. Sorry, it has taken much time to read this memo Best regards, Masao Aochi

Was assigned to the Boat Group. What a motley crew THAT was (Galvin, Hooper, myself ect...). I also played in the ships "band". Comment: I served aboard the USS Tulare AKA-112 from April, 1958-December, 1961. I made three WestPac cruises during my tenure. In 1959, I was the sailor who was airlifted to the Army hospital in Okinawa with an appendicitis attack when we were approximately one hundred miles at sea headed for Hong Kong. I reboarded the Tulare about a month later when it returned to Okinawa. I first went aboard ship out of boot camp at San Diego with a friend of mine, Paul Gore. I first went into second division for a very short period of time, then I was transferred to third division. I then was transferred to the shipfitter's shop. When I left in 1961, I was a SF3. I am now retired and living in Asheville, NC. I would be happy to help organize a reunion, however I have no idea of how to obtain the addresses of those sailors who are not listed on your guest book.

Comment: Ed, I enjoyed your web site on the Tulare. My name is Ken Fairbanks, I reported aboard the Tulare right out of RTC San Diego in 1962 and made the 62-63 West Pac cruise, working in the ships office as a SN-personnel man striker. Mustered out and left the ship in March of 64. Was the last of a drafted few who were allowed to spend two years in the Navy. Had a great time with a super bunch of dedicated guys. I have a cruise book from 62-63 West Pac which has information on all people on board at that time.. Including pictures of Capt. Donald B. Ramage, he wasn't much for having his picture taken. Your history information is right on but doesn't say anything about the ship being caught in a typhoon in the South China Sea, collision with another ship, the screw chopping up the dock, chasing subs, shots fired to stop a shadowing ship, incidents while loading ammo form the Iwo Jima just to name a few. Also, Capt. Ramage made Admiral when he returned to San Diego from this cruise. If you could use any info from the cruise book I'll be happy to e-mail it to you. Regards, Ken Fairbanks

Comment: I was stationed aboard the TU TU right out of boot camp. I was first in 3rd division and later transfered over to radarman. i did two west pac cruises on Tu TU and on the second one after i had became a shellback vs a polywog,we had a wonderful time with some midshipmen that were aboard the ship at that time, like making them kiss the baby stomach which of course was the biggest guy on board with every kind of food or anythingelse we could find rubbed all over his belly and we would make these midshipmen kiss his belly. i remember my best friend Kenneth Ayers whick would be really nice to find again. also remember some other buddies Williiam Vire who transfered to radarmen before me.OS is where we came up with Fitzicks Fanatics. There is no doubt that some of the best times were back then aboard the Tu Tu. I also remember having a full Captain who was Glen Cheek got to be his personell driver while in port plus whenever we would go in port we were always first because he was a rank of captain. Remember some of the officers ENS Rush, LTjg Martin and Ens Peterson seem to get along well with them. Anyone who served in deck crews want forger WO-1 Robles. Remeber swim call in the middle of the ocean and last but not least home away from home SUBIC BAY. would love to here from any of former crew of TU Tu. Comment: I remember long 1A's. Especially off Viet Nam. Stood watch, four on and four off when we were transporting troops between Cam Rahn Bay and Tuy Hoa (I think)? The Captain broke out some San Miguel beer and we were treated to a steak fry on the fan tail after that long operation. Or was I dreaming? I remember a Marine Sergeant all ticked off because he and the troops were being sent ashore without ammunition. I remember the Pacific Ocean being calm and smooth as a small Minnesota lake or so rough it was frightening during a Typhoon. I remember the smell of land after being at sea for a long period and how green it looked. I remember loading the holds with lumber and making a bee line for Vietnam. I remember how hot it was in the engine room, we had heat rash all the time. I remember watching the flying fish and dolphins (porpoise). And I remember you Ed, thanks for bringing back these memories. I remember these times with a sense of peace and pride in having served. Now, after all these years, I'm amazed at how much responsibility was entrusted to such young men; and we thought nothing of it.

Comment: The time I spent aboard the Tulare were probably some of the most important and formative years of my life. I met and worked with some of the greatest people, the officers were true leaders in many ways, and the teamwork by all was excellent. The many trips to Westpac, Vietnam, two trips over the equator and the many ports we visited have provided a lifetime of good memories. I have found one of my shipmates in Brau Bridge, La. His name is Gerald Taylor. We have reunited and shared some great memorys with each other in the last few years. I would love to hear from any of the guys that served with me. It would be great to be in contact with them.

Ship: NA
Tulare crew member from 12/63 to 6/65
Comment: My name is Greg Adelson. I came aboard the Tulare in December of '64. I was just out of boot camp. I was assigned to First Division. I was a deck ape until I could get a transfer to X Division and became the ship's postal clerk. I made two Westpac cruises aboard the Tulare. On the first one we crossed the equator and I was initiated and became a shellback. On that cruise we ended up going to Nam, but we pulled some pretty good liberty. I left the Big "T" in June of '65 as a PC3. I have lived in Los Angeles since getting out. I have been a court reporter for the past 32 years. I enjoyed the Tulare, had good shipmates and good memories. If anyone I served with would like to get in touch with me, feel free to do so.

Ship: NA
Tulare crew member from 5/74 to 7/74
Comment: I steamed as a temporary member of the TULARE crew while on my ACDUTRA in summer '74 as a midshipman 3rd class. Participated in marine landing exercise at Kaneohe, Hawaii and in Operation KANGAROO at Brisbane/Hervey Bay, Australia during the first part of TULARE's WESTPAC cruise that summer. She was a great-riding old girl, slow steady roll. I've got some old photos, but would like to get a good color 8X10 of TULARE. After leaving TULARE, I served aboard JUNEAU and eventually enlisted in the USCG. Retired from USCG in 1996.

Tulare crew member from 6/62 to 5/65
Ships: USS Tulare, USS Collett, USS Frontier, USS Isle Royle, BT 'B' School, USS Ranger, USS Niagara Falls, NAS Corpus Christi, USS Plymouth Rock, USAMPS, Ft. McClellan, Al., USS Canopus
Comment: Reported aboard Tulare in June '62 as a FA fresh out of RTC San Diego, at the time she was tied up outboard side of the Jason at 32nd Street. Struck (assigned to) for BT and departed in '65 as a BT2 headed for a tin can that I finally found in Keelung, Tiawain. The Tulare was exceptionally clean, tight crew, good feeder and long, long, long 1A's thought for a while that I was striking for BM and not BT assigned Hatch #3 as a line handler until I made BT2 then went back to the engineroom. Wonderful tour of duty.
