MacKenzie; my "boss" was LCDR Bob Spargo from New Haven, CT. We were
on
the WesPac cruise to Sydney, Australia, departing San Diego 11
Feb 57,
visiting numerous ports, including Hong Kong, Nagasaki,
Pusan, etc, with our home port (WesPac) in Yokosuka. Gus Asseier,
an assistant supply officer, and I shook hands when I left Tulare
for another ship in 08/57, and ran into each other in Brooklyn, NY,
6 or 7 years later
in the Navy Exchange Cafeteria. Cheers for Commissary
Chief Richardson

Comments: While waiting for Nuclear Power School to open up I served on the
Tulare during an abbreviated WESTPAC that began November 1970. If
I recall correctly, we visited Okinawa, Subic and Singapore, where
I endured a Crossing the Line ceremony. Yes, I am a trusty Shellback.
I flew back to Vallejo for Nuc school in January 1971, but washed
out weeks later because of poor eyesight. After several months in
transit, I was shipped to Vietnam where I served on the USS Tutuila.
She was anchored 10 miles south of Saigon on the Saigon River. After
10 months in-country I served onboard the guided missile destroyer
USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 homeported in Pearl Harbor. I went on
a WESTPAC with her. I wrote about my navy experiences in the novel
"Steve McQueen Would Be Proud." Check it out at http://www.xlibris.com
or on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. Strangely enough, I stumbled across
another Tulare vet here in Estes Park. His name is Dave Floyd.
I gave him a picture of the Tulare in Hawaii. I

Name: Bruce Pietsch, Capt.DWTodd       Location: Groton, MA, USA
Duty Station: USS Tulare was my Grandfather's ship, he is 1st listed office, I believe I can scan a photo and send to you for your web site. He died in 1974 after developing mouth cancer from smoking a pipe for many years. He lived in Seattle, WA where he lived his final years and I spent many summers with him.
Comments: My step-Grandfather Captain Donald W. Todd of 29th Ave. N.E. Seattle,
WA was the 1st captain of the USS Tulare. He told me many stories,
mostly amusing of his naval career. I have a very fine photo of him
on my firelplace mantle that I can try to scan or will have copied
for you for your website if you would like.
I can even try to film
it with my digital camera and import the image so you can quickly
have something for your site of the 1st captain. He was a fine man,
you may know more about his career than I do but I know during WWII
he ran his ship between Gibralter and north Africa and had the subs
timed. I do not know what ship that was, he had a brother named Wood
(nick name) Todd that was also a captain. I believe they both graduated
from Annapolis. My fathers mother and he were teenage sweethearts,
both divorced who maintained contact over the years and were remarried
when he retired in 1966. Her name was Carolyn Neubigan (maiden name).

Duty Station: Was stationed at DaNang, with the airwing, flying A6's.
Comments: You squids picked up & brought back to the world 41 Marines. We
all did not get along for the first week, but after we all kicked
each others ass, we were all buddies. The good times started to roll.
I remember the Tulare also being called 'the crystal ship.' (so I
was told by the crew.) After we all got settled with each other
we had nothing but love for each other. You guys did a great job,
were lots of fun & good company to a bunch of guys taken right out
of a warzone. I remember that we almost threw our senior nco overboard
cause he was causing trouble for us. We did threathen him, & hence
he never was above decks again for the remainder of the trip. The
5 high bunk beds really sucked. The food was ok. The friends we all
made were great. A big hello to a few sailors: L.A Westbrook, Alex
Walter, Jr, Merle Williams, Jeff Bundy(Meadows), Dennis Bowen, Bob
Devine, Bill Hartwig, & thats all I can remember. Much love to all

Comments: Uss Tulare was my first ship. When I first saw her I thought she
was HUGE. Now Compared to the Nimitz, I can see she was not all that
large.
She was a good ship, the old girl took me overseas for the
first time.
First tike out I gotr seasick as all get outs, the Chief
just teid a bucket around my neck, and told me to get out on watch,
chew crakers and puke. No sympthy there I tell you.
What Has happened
to the old Girl/ I hear rumors that she has been sold and towed away
for scrap! I sure hope not, she was too fine a ship for that!
May
all those who served on this proud old lady, be well, and may God
bless you all.

My husband, John "Ski" Zinkowski served on the Tulare from 65-69.
In December [2003], John lost his battle with brain cancer. The notes
and e-mails that he received from his fellow shipmates, (because of
the Tulare site), were little sparkles of joy. You can't begin to
understand how your efforts to keep in touch effect people.
Thank you. Karen Z. and the family of "Ski"
Hi Ed, Of course you may post my message. John and I

Comments: I was a communicator with the 7th Marines at Las Pulgas, Camp Pendelton
and made Tulare's maiden cruise out of San Diego. I know it was
the first time us grunts were aboard, because you guy's were complaining
about the mess we made in stowing our jeeps, gear, etc. Everything
was brand spanking new and "Factory" painted.
My Mother (92)is
Irish so the only time I ate better food was on a "AGC" whose name
I've forgot. Don't think Tulare food was that good. . . Shoney's
and the Marine Corp served better chow than my Mom! She had 6 boy's.
I tell her today the reason we went in the service was to get decent
meals. My Dad cooked on holidays, thank God he was part Hungarian.
Two weeks ago I visited my Uncles ship in Wilmington NC. He sailed
BB-55 the North Carolina out of Brooklyn NY where it was built, and
helped bring the 7th Marines to Guadacanal. It was "Kinda" sad for
me and I would have thought the Battleship sailors had more space
than they did. I didn't envy his sailing about for 4 or 5 years
he was aboard.

Comment: Ed, Was in SanFrancisco last week and took a trip and was able to see the
Tulare. What a great feeling to see the Big "T". She is painted a light gray and I
was able to read the 112. They would not allow me past the gate but the guard spent
at least a half-hour with me and gladly pointed out the Tulare. She is presently
in the row behind the barge, second ship in, from the shore. The guard told me they
still use the booms and keep them in operating condition. He also told me the Tulare
is classified as a 60 day ship which means it can be put back into the shipyard and
service in a 60 day period, if needed. Further conversation revailed that he has
taken people out to board their ships, raise a flag and walk the decks. Ed, I strongly
feel that if we got a small group together, contacted our senators we could pull off
a on board visit and have a small reunion. Any interest? Henry Scherer

Comment: Hello: Have just spent over an hour visiting your site. Its great, and I'm sure many others, like me,
appreciate your efforts. I was a late CO on the old gal, in fact, I think I was the last four striper. (Oct "71 - May "73) I was
relieved by Cdr. V. R. Bussard who was on board until May, '74. The various comments on the site attest to the fact that
TULARE enjoyed crews that really cared for the ship. It was quite evident to me that she had had lots of TLC over the years,
and she could still run with the best of them - even in l973. She had a fine reputation throughout the Pacific Phib Force,
I heard bits of info from Bosn Breeding (a former TULARE sailor) when he and I exchanged sea stories during the sixties.
I was proud to command her toward the close of her active life in PhibPac.
I now call Merritt Island, FL. home port, and at age 79 take most of life on a slow bell. Still active tho,
and thankful for "pretty good" health. Congrats again on a fine site. Glen Cheek...

the Tulare. Where shes at now is not far from where I live. I'll take a drive
one of these days to see if I can see Her. Hello Ed.As seeing your picture I
do seem to remember you. I served on the Tulare last part of 1963 to June 1967.
I was assigned to B division, the good ol fireroom and was oil king for one

different time periods. I'll need time to get them to geather and go thru
them and get copies made. I just need to know where to send them.
