Tulare crew member from 4/67 - 1/70
Comments: Lets say life aboard the Tulare was a life experience -- I always thought the service was a serious adventure. Then I met Phillip Koteen, Thomas Saice, Andy Anderson and all the alcoholic Electrician chiefs. In addition, was Lt Wynn (Lt Buddha we all called him)-- Of course lets not forget Lt "Zavo" whom I actually ran into later in civilian life (he was still the same) -- The IC shop was the chiefs bar -- will never forget all the Akadama Wine we stored in the air vents and swapped bottles with the chiefs for the good stuff. Then when we had 4 cargo holds of Black Label beer and the crew stayed stone drunk for the entire time we were off loading it. When I was lead PO in the IC shop, I had this kid named Phillip Tyne come to work for me -- his first act of kindness was to throw up in Wynn trash can on his first day. He became the weight trainer for the US Olympic volleyball team. Today he is on the Athletic staff at Baylor University. Life has been good to me -- I have been married to the same wonderful lady I met right after I got out of the service, for 33 years with two beautiful daughters and 3 fantastic grandchildren. I have spent the past 35 years in the computer industry in one facet or another. t

Comments: I worked in the personnel office on the Tulare, beginning while we were working in temporary offices at Bethlehem Steel in San Francisco while the ship was being completed. I left the Tulre just before she sailed in early 1957. Names I remember: Bob Winninger, Dick Ehrentraut, my superior in the personnel office, LTjg Richard L Gover, who was our Personnel Officer, Ray Jackson, Gene Farmer and Norman Finney of the Supply division, LTcdr Norconk, LTcdr Harriman, Dick Wildegrube, Tom Ecker who worked in the Deck office, YN1 Bill Strickler. I would certainly like to hear from anyone who served on the Tulare during that time.

Duty Station: USS Bennington(CVS 20) and USS Midway (CVA 41
Comments: The USS Tulare was the first ship I was on ever. After A school in Great Lakes Ill. I was sent to Long Beach to the Tulare, that was in 1959. We made stops in Pearl Harbor, Yokosuka and finally in Sasebo, where I met up with my ship the USS Midway. I remember this trip because on the way we met up with some really heavy seas and most of the sailors being transfered got sick and made the living quarters unbearable. I crawled up into one of the landing crafts and spent the night there. I didn't get seasick but I remember being somewhat scared at the time, since this was the first time I went to sea. As I look back on it, it was a piece of cake.

Tulare crew member from 1/56 - 2/57
Comments: I have forgotten the exact month I was transferred to the USS Tulare, but, I was on the original crew, working in the offices in Bethlehem Steel in San Francisco. Crew members that I remember at that time were the Captain's yeoman, YN1 Bill Strickler, PN2 Dick Ehrentraut, in the personnel office, Operations officer, LCDR Harriman, who came to us from the ammo base at McAlester, Oklahoma, YN3 Dick Wildegrube, who worked under LCDR Harriman, YN3 Tom Ecker, who worked in the Deck office, SK3 Ray Jackson of Amarillo, Texas, SK3 Gene Farmer of Little Rock, Arkansas, and MM3 Bob Winninger, and, I surely can't forget SKSN Norm Finney from Whitefish, Montana, one of the craziest guys I ever met (a lot of great memories). LTJG Richard L Gover, from New York, later came on to be our personnel officer. I was to be discharged in May '57, so, without extending, I could not sail with them on their first extended cruise, leaving the Tulare just a few days before their departure. I served as Captain's talker on the bridge during training exercises, as I had done on the USS Gen JC Brecinridge TAP-176. I really enjoyed serving under Captain Donald W Todd, as, I had also served under his brother, Captain David W Todd on the Breckinridge.I would like to hear from anyone who served on the Tulare in that time. Comments: My name is Fred Terrill FN served on the USS Tulare from 1969 through 1971. I really need your help and assistance in someone remembering me on shore in Da nang. I was a fireman in R division and I used to stand on the dock with fire extinguisher when in port. I also was taken to the base to get mahogany wood to make the cruise boxes for the officers. I worked the wood shop and in the welding shop. I made 3 westpac cruises and I believe I served under Lt. Gladsen and WO James was my boss. I have cancer and the VA needs a buddy letter from someone who can remember me. I can't remember much about my tours other than I did go ashore in Da nang on the base to get supplies and scavenging plywood. If anyone can help me I would sure appreciate it as I am in the process of completing my VA application. Please e-mail me if anyone can help me as I need a buddy letter. Thank you, Fred E. Terrill

Duty Station: NA
Tulare crew member from 10/63 - 9/66
Comments: Served aboard Tulare during the 65 and 66 trips to Viet Nam waters. Was in 4th division as a Fire Control Technician. I remember a lot of good times and two crossings over the equator. Needless to say, the second crossing was better. I'd like to hear from some of the gunners and fire controlmen I served with. t

Comments: Sorry, not Navy. Did however spend 24 years in the Air Force. Found out about the USS Tulare on ebay. Bought a "USS Tulare" post card from a guy in Long Beach. Doing a little researh now and plan on displaying the card along with her awards (ribbons) with my other military collection. This is better than Christmas! Gods speed and prayers to all those who served on the USS Tulare.

Comments: I served mainly under Captains MacKenzie and Crawford. I was the Electronics Officer for a while but spent most of my tour as the CIC Officer. OI Division personnel that come to mind are Poole, Overturf,& Blankenship. Op's Officer for the WestPac Cruise in 1957 was LCDR Harriman with CDR Ashe as our Exec. The "Big T" was a great ship with an outstanding crew as evidenced by the many awards she displayed such as the Engineering "E" ,Gunnery "E" and the Assault Boat Insigne Awards.
